VINTAGE SCHOOL DAY RECORD SCRAPBOOK FROM THE 1940'S

Good estates sales have been few and far between the last couple of months. Last week end was cold so I only went to a couple on Saturday and didn't find very much. Sunday, my youngest daughter walked in and said, "Mom, let's go to an estate sale." Of course I said ok and off we went. I got there and it looked like a family run sale which was good, they are usually the cheapest sales to go to. After looking around for about 10 minutes, I was about to give up and go home empty handed when I saw this blue book and wondered what it was. At first I thought it was a scrapbook which I usually buy if they are in good condition.

When I opened it I was more than pleasantly surprised!!!! The plain blue cover did not give a hint of what I found inside. It was a 1940's School Day Record book, unused except for a name inside the front cover. The graphics were amazing. My daughter asked if someone had colored the pictures. The coloring is much too perfect for that, I knew it was the way the graphics were made. It started off with a list of class officers.

This next page is perfect for a picture of the school.

Who can forget the teacher telling us to hush! Perfect page to list our favorite teachers and maybe post a picture.

Ending with a page devoted to that "big day" we couldn't wait for, our graduation!

The back of the book had several pages to place all our keepsakes.

It's a reminder that all generations cared about the same things and that memories are cherished!

KIMMSWICK'S 1ST ANNUAL WITCHES NIGHT OUT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!!!

Around 2,000 witches showed up for a night of shopping and fun. The three above are dressed like the Hocus Pocus witches and came into my shop. All the shops voted on the "best witch" costume and here she is!

All the witches were looking for "body parts" for the scavenger hunt. My body part was named "baby bones". I had Baby Bones on my front counter and they all said it was too easy! lol! More time to shop if they find it right away!

Of course, the town was decked out and ready for our visitors. This is a photo of one of our newer shops, the Picket Fence Primitives.

We even had witch cupcakes to marvel over!

I'm hoping to get some pictures to post later of our winners for Best Witch, Best Broom and Best Wig. All the shops received ballots we turned in at the end of the event. The winners received prizes.

We are already looking forward to next year's event.

The merchants of historic Kimmswick are inviting you to our 1st annual Witches Night Out. Won't you come join us for a Spell on this Be-Witching Friday night? RECYCLE REPURPOSE REUSE REDUCE

I've been a member of the Prim Mart Community for several years now. One of my prim sisters posted this adorable little scarecrow named Charlie, pattern is from Olde Country Cupboards. The first thing I noticed was his hat, simply an upside down funnel. Perfect! The funnel has not been altered in any way, just reused for a different purpose. You can visit Linda on her blog, The Olde Homestead Blog for more fall crafts and decorating ideas.

Place in a bucket, add a saying and you have the perfect fall decor.

UNEXPECTED TREASURE!

Everyone that loves vintage knows and understands the thrill of the hunt. Going to sales and dragging home to clean or repair your new found treasures. Every now and then, something shows up unexpected that is a treasure all in it's own. In the previous post, I showed all my Goodwill purchases. I photographed them and listed them in my etsy shops . When I was listing this book, I noticed in the photograph a tiny corner of something sticking out. Look closely at the lower right side.

This beautiful little book, The Ways Of God is from the 1920's. When I opened it to the page of the paper sticking out I found this wonderful German die cut being used as a bookmark. Such an unexpected treasure! Beautiful soft graphics with a bible verse, Psalms 23, verse 1 written in German. "The Lord is my shepard, I shall not want".

Probably from the same decade as the book as it does show age with the tanning of the paper.

Do you ever find unexpected treasures inside books or boxes? Or hidden behind pictures in frames? Makes you think twice!

GOODWILL OUTLET STORE SELLS BY THE POUND!!

Have you heard of Goodwill outlet stores? We have one that just opened up in May, 2011. Merchandise that does not sell in the regular Goodwill stores is shipped to the outlet and placed in huge bins. It's located along highway 40 just before you hit downtown St. Louis. It's last call for all these items, what doesn't sell is gotten rid of. We are living green by shopping there, right? At least that is what I told myself when I saw all the bins.

Shoppers have to sift through these to find their treasures, items are not sorted and barely organized. There are huge bins of books, records, dishes, clothes and misc. items. Items are sold by the pound, not by item. They roll the bins out to a waiting crowd every so often. You can hear the roar when a new bin comes out filled with fresh items. Wonderful vintage children's blocks.

This wonderful old book cover...the book may have buried somewhere in one of the bins but I couldn't find it. I'm sure someone will be able to upcycle this into something fabulous!

This one, The Ways Of God by Margaret Lenk is dated 1925.

The Charles Dickens' Christmas Stories book is dated 1936.

And there is more!!! A wonderful children's mystery book, Mystery In The Old Red Barn with original jacket cover dated 1952

Another Christmas book, The Reindeer Book by Aurelius Battaglia, this one for children dated 1965.

A Macrame' craft book from the 1970's. About time it came back again, right?

Paul Bunyan, The Giant Lumberjack dated 1941.

Last, but not least, this wonderful tin with a bird that looks like the bird of paradise flower.

All of these will eventually be in my Etsy shops, AntiquesGaloreGal or VintageTinsel. I think I may have to make this a weekly visit!

MYSTERY ITEM

Every now and then I come across something that I have no idea what it is. I thought this was a funnel but looked odd with the handle. Then I thought maybe a holder for a cozy cup, but most cups are not shaped like this.

Actually, it is a kitchen tool that was common in most kitchens mid century and earlier. Indeed, you will find them in some kitchens today, especially in rural or farming areas.

DOWN MEMORY LANE...PERFUMES FROM MY PAST

Talk about a trip down memory land to the 1960-1970's era! A quick sniff was all I needed to see a bottle of Windsong from Matchebelle on my mother's dresser. Heaven Scent from MEM Co. and brings up memories of my high school girl friends who wore it. To coin a phrase, "Those Were The Days!". I don't remember Sophia from Coty, but my mother used Coty facepowder, which is still made today.

I've had this box of perfumes for a while now in storage. I finally got it out and boy was I surprised to open it and find all three in their original unused bottles!!

I have to admit, they don't smell EXACTLY like I remember...maybe my memory is faulty, or they could have changed somewhat from age. But I love them anyway!!! How many of you used these? Wondering if they are still in production?? You can find these in my Etsy shop.

Collectible Planters

You will find planters at almost every estate sale, flea market or auction that you attend. I have to admit, I have a fondness for them. I grew up helping out in my grandparents flower shop, so there are many memories attached to planters. I recently found some that I've added to my Etsy shop . This one with the bright green elephant is Made In Japan. I think it is my favorite.

I love the simplicity of the next two. Unmarked, but from my research they are probably Morton Pottery and from the 1950's. Both are very heavy with an unglazed bottom. The first one is a water pump and a wooden bucket. It almost looks like a lid with the rim around the base. It sits upright though and it's listed as a planter everywhere I've researched. I call the pump color green, but I've noticed it called elsewhere as teal. It does have a bit of blue in the color.

I've found this planter listed several places but with a pink kangaroo. I couldn't find another blue one. It does have a bit of crazing in the glaze but I don't mind one bit!

I haven't had time to research this one. It's pottery and very heavy. I loved the soft muted colors and most people like birds.

Planters are easy to find, affordable and have many uses. They often come with a few flaws from the manufacturer such as roughness in the glaze or flaws in the colors such as the white spot in the kangaroo. The elephant one is just the right size to sit my cell phone or camera in. The kangaroo and water pump are perfect for brushes or pencils. If you have more uses for them be sure to let me know!

I'm always on the look out for ways to reuse vintage items without altering them. In other words, use them just like they are. I found this idea posted on Margo's Junkin Journal blog. Simply drape a scarf around a lampshade or a lampshade frame. A quick and simple way to change the look without doing harm to either item! Lots more projects on her blog as well! I hope you can take the time to check it out, it's one of my favorites! You can also visit her etsy shop Ruff By Margo.

FLOODING IN KIMMSWICK, MISSOURI SPRING 2011

Every year there is some flooding in Kimmswick. The town is like a pond, with the Mississippi river to the east, a creek to the south and hills east and west. Here are a few pictures I took.
Coming into town, the main road. The right side is usually a big field with the creek in the far background. The creek is normally behind the row of trees and cannot be seen from the road.

The other side of the road is where athletic fields are located, also under water.

One of the first places in town to take on water is the Visitor Center. You can see the pile of sand and the sand bags. The field beside the center is low and one of the first places in town to flood.

This is the back entrance to town, the one closest to the Mississippi River. There is an old bridge, no longer used right next to the new bridge. Normally, just a small creek.

Close up of bridge. To the left, you will see the road that normally goes under the railroad bridge to homes. This gives you an idea of how deep it is.

Once you cross the bridge you can see on your left the Aneuser Bush estate grounds. Once a summer home. It sits on the bluffs, you can see how high the river is behind the home.

The clouds you see are the way the sky has looked for weeks! Very little sunshine.

BRIGHT AND COLORFUL! WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR?

CONCRETE STATUES AT ANTIQUES GALORE GAL IN HISTORIC KIMMSWICK, MISSOURI

I love to garden and have concrete fountains, bird baths and small turtles and frogs scattered about in my yard. For a long time, I've wanted to open up a garden area at my retail shop. There is a small fenced in area that is perfect! So, I took the plunge recently. Here are a few things I found to start off with. I think the mother hen and her three babies were my favorite, they sold almost immediately!
This giant shoe is awesome! It took two of us to carry it and it landed on our front porch steps. Needless to say, it sold right away also.

RECYCLE REPURPOSE REUSE REDUCE

There are a million and one ways to upcycle vintage items, but I like to showcase ideas that use the item in it's original condition. It's actually harder to find items reused rather than upcycled! While viewing ThreeOldKeys etsy shop, I came across these vintage funnels that I love!

Three funnels in their original condition being reused as a display and flag holder. Such a simple idea and photo that makes a huge impact! I think I'm going to be on the look out for a few of these myself!

ThreeOldKeys also suggests putting a small cup of water under the funnel and using as a flower vase. You can see a funnel being used as a flower vase in a previous post here.

SHAKER VILLAGE OF PLEASANT HILL

I love paper ephemera! I'm always on the look out for vintage books, cards, magazines, etc. while thrifting. I've had this 1966 Woman's Day magazine sitting around here for a long time. I decided to list it this morning. While writing the description, I glanced at the table of contents and MUCH TO MY SURPRISE noticed a feature on "Shaker Town", which is only a few minutes from where I grew up in central Kentucky.

Shaker Town is what we always called it and still do to this day. However, it is now Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. The restored Pleasant Hill will show you eamples of nineteenth-century construction, exhibits of Shaker life and customs, handcrafts, furniture. Always a simplicity and perfection that is not found in society today..

My grand parents would take the entire family to Shaker Town every Christmas for a simple meal lite by candles. Food was served family style, in bowls that were passed around. It was their Christmas gift to us. A treasured gift that will last a lifetime, as the memories are still with me today! Our family continues the tradition of going there at Christmas. I haven't made it back home for Christmas in a couple of years, but look forward to my next visit!

Isn't that why most of us in the antique/collectible world do what we do??? We hold on to the past in a way that others do not understand. A simple long lost picture or item can bring back a thousand memories! I guess it was meant to be that I found this wonderful magazine in someones attic! Gotta wonder if it was waiting just for me to find it?

I know Valentine's Day is just around the corner, but we just had another major snow storm.

My grown sons went outside to "play in the snow" and snapped this photo. It's been a long time since we have had a snowman in our yard so I rushed out to see it! lol! It's only about 24" high. Still, very cute boys!

VINTAGE VALENTINE CANDY BOXES

Today I'm linking up for Rednesday over on It's A Very Cherry World.

Everyone is familiar with the typical heart shaped Valentine candy boxes. They have become very collectible because they pull at our heart strings and remind us of our teenage years where our young boyfriends would shyly gives it to us on this special day. If you walk into any store this time of year, the shelves are still lined with candy boxes of every size and shape, for any budget. It's a tradition that has never gone away and is a bright spot in the otherwise cold and dreary days of winter. I have to admit I have a couple boxes stored away myself! They may have looked like the red one above.
Or, maybe, like this beautiful pink one!

I came across these two unusual boxes at estate sales here in the St. Louis area. Both could be used for Valentines Day, or any other time of the year. The first one is from the Mavraks Candy Company which was founded here in St. Louis in 1913. They produced many family secret recipes and peaked in the 1950's. This box was actually found with Christmas decorations, but could just have easily been a box of chocolates for Valentines day with it's bright red bow!

Even the inside has pretty ruffles.

Beautiful enough to leave sitting out on your dresser year round!

The Mavrakes Company closed in the mid 1980's but was reopened in 2009 and still makes many of the old family candy recipes.

Another candy company was Scraffts. They made this beautiful box that was filled with delicious chocolates. The artwork is stunning, the flowers are slightly embossed.

The Schraffts candy and chocolate factory was bases in Charlestown, Ma. Founded in 1861 by William F. Schrafft. Over the next 50 years or so, they branched out into ice cream and resturant chains. The Pet Milk company purchased it in 1967 and broke it into separate companies. Currently the only Schrafft label in use is the the one for ice cream.

OUR LITTLE TREE

I posted this on my Vintage Tinsel blog, but wanted to share it here as well.

Every year I put up a large artificial tree with my burgandy, gold and crystal ornaments. My sons decided we needed a real tree and came home with this one. It's only 4'-5' tall but smells so good! We decided to leave the main tree in the foyer as always and placed this one in the corner of the dining room. My daughter decided to take a picture and changed the color. This is what she came up with.

I wanted to share this small box of colored crayons I found this week at an estate sale. It was always so exciting as a child to go to the dime store and pick up a new box of crayons for school. Colored pencils (which is what I called them) were considered an unnecessary item and were usually passed by. What drew me to this box were the sweet graphics of mid century. The pencils are still usable but would look great in a small jar sitting on the shelf, ready to use for an art or crafting project!

It's Vintage Love Saturday over on SouthernLadyVintage's blog. This week the theme is children and young adult books. Fortunately, I have several to share! Mother Goose was always one of my favorites. My grandparents brought me a copy when I was 5 or 6 years old and sick for several days. I remember reading it over and over. To this day, reading one of the many nursery rhymes brings a smile to my heart. This is a smaller book, made for little hands. Dated 1960. Loved today as much as it was 50 years ago.

This adorable children's book was published in the 1940's. I love the graphics of this decade. They are bright and cherry!

All children love puppies, so this one is sure to please. Dated 1943. Written for an older child, doesn't have all the pictures, but a sweet story!

It's Vintage Love Saturday on SouthernLadyVintage's blog. This week's theme is Vintage dolls. I thought this would be a cute and unusual doll to share.

Okay, you are probably wondering what on earth this is! It's a decorative wall hanging/potholder/hotpad with a doll's face. The face can easily be removed if you actually use this as a potholder or hot pad. Here is the doll hanging up. So cute!

There is a button to detatch the bottom from the top.

As you can see, the "dress" of the doll is actually two separate potholders/hotpads.
Perfect for any retro kitchen or a just plain kitschy decoration!

Another week has rolled around and it's Vintage Love Saturday over on SouthernLadyVintage's blog. Each week there is a new theme and today it's vintage china. There are so many beautiful china patterns, but this one brings back fond memories. It was my grandmother's pattern. Not expensive, but loved, none the less. It is easy to find at estate sales, however you may not recognize it. Each piece has a different scene on it. These are Colonial Homestead dishes by Royal China. I love the green and white colors and the colonial pattern is perfect for a farm house, cabin or anywhere else for that matter!

VINTAGE LOVE SATURDAY...VINTAGE LINENS

It's Saturday and that means it's time for SouthernLadyVintage's blog hop. Feel free to join in and vote on next week's theme. This week's theme is vintage linens, one of my favorite things! I found this linen at an estate sale. Too small to be a table cloth and bigger than most dish towels. It was hanging on the oven door for display which is a perfect place for it. It can also be used as a table topper.

Another favorite is this crocheted hankie. I love the colors and the attention to detail. Too pretty to use, but would look wonderful framed.

SATURDAY LOVE VINTAGE...VINTAGE COLOR TINTED PHOTOGRAPHS

It's Vintage Love Saturday, a blog hop hosted by SouthernLadyVintage. This week's theme is vintage photographs. If you have been in the antiques and collectible business for very long, you know the feeling. The feeling of loving something so much you can't imagine parting with it! I think my newest collection is color tinted photographs.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, these say it all. They represent a time that has passed but is not forgotten. The women are perfectly made up! The hair, clothes, make up and jewelry. Like this beautiful rhinestone brooch!

Since it is fall, I decided to show off some orange. Nothing says fall like crisp, cool air and wrapping up with warm covers, preferably in front of a fire! I found this bright afghan recently and just couldn't resist. I think it would look great just being thrown across a chair on a front porch or the foot of a bed.

Perfect colors for fall...orange, yellow and brown!

SATURDAY VINTAGE LOVE...FARMHOUSE THEME

This week Southern Ladys Vintage is again hosting Saturday Vintage Love with a Farmhouse Theme. I spent much of my childhood with one grandmother who lived in the country. I think what I remember most were the big family meals and watching her cook. I found a few items that would definitely be found in a farm kitchen! First a wooden recipe box with a metal rooster on the front of it. Made in Japan and perfect for any farm kitchen!

And what farm house would be with a nice wooden spoon to stir all those pots of soups and stews?

Let's not forget about all those pies to be baked in the aluminum pie pans!

It's all about strawberries this week! I picked both of these items up at estate sales this past week end. These 2 little strawberries were so sweet I had to get them. The fabric is velvety and has tiny beads attached for seeds. Perfect to embellish a gift package or add to a crafting project. Vintage and aged to perfections these are available in my Notions And Trims etsy shop!!

Who could resist these little plastic elephants? So ugly, so kitsch! I think these are cake decorations. These were purchased at an estate sale in a box full of cake toppers and decorations. CELEBRATING REDNESDAY AGAIN!

I'm celerating my second Rednesday with the Sue Loves Cherries Blog If you love red you have to visit her blog and check out all the red items. Thanks for the opportunity to join in! I'm sharing these adorable red cherry and strawberry sewing appliques. These are perfect for any sewing or crafting project you may have. When my kids were little, I would embellish all their clothing with cute appliques to personalize them. It's so easy to add them to your kitchen potholders or dish towels as well. Fun and inexpensive.

Another way to dress up an item is with a pretty cloth red ribbon. You can add it as a border for clothing or household items!

Recycle Reduce Repurpose Reuse

Another Recycle, Reduce, Repurpose, Reuse post. The idea is to take a vintage item and reuse it without altering it in any way. This oil can is from the etsy shop Vintage Dazzle.
This is a highly collectible antique motor oil can from the 1940s or 1950s. Made of galvanized steel, this darling little vessel can be used as a vase, as part of your country decor, or you can actually use it as a watering can for your flowers.

The can has raised lettering on both sides. On one side it says "ONE QUART LIQUID." On the other it says "NYC-1 APPROVED Q 10 LAWSON CINTI" And then a triangle, inside of which it says "61 MINN."
Can is 7.5" tall by 10" wide (tip of spout to handle).

VintageDazzle owner Kara Lennox started out on Etsy selling crafts. When she included a few vintage items (left over from her long-ago space at an antiques mall) and they quickly sold, she realized how much she missed buying and selling treasures from the past. She opened a new Etsy shop and threw herself into it. Most of her business is in scarves and jewelry--costume pieces from the 1930s through 1960s are her favorites. But sometimes she can't resist larger items--like the oil can. When she isn't haunting yard sales and flea markets, Kara writes romance novels for Harlequin Books.

This is a true treasure, an Electric Refrigerator recipe book dated 1927 and prepared by General Electric. In good vintage condition. There are 144 pages of recipes and tips.
An advertisement from General Electric has been glued inside the front cover.

Graphics are endearing.

Another favorite of mine is this one for Sunday dinners. I remember as a child sitting in church, and one by one, the women would make a graceful exit to go home and get the Sunday dinner on the table. This is a really neat cookbook, dated 1969. Author is Phyllis S. Prokop. Contains menus for Sunday dinners complete with fix ahead instructions and recipes. Recipes are for the average size family of 4-6 people. Also contains a chapter on how to conquer pie crusts.

And what better way to end a meal than with an dessert from this Elegant Desserts cookbook? 220 delicious elegant dessert in the vintage Culinary Arts Institute cookbook. Dated 1954. This paper cookbook has over 60 pages loaded with recipes sure to please.

CELEBRATEING REDNESDAY WITH A VINTAGE CHERRY APRON

I'm celerating Rednesday with the Sue Loves Cherries Blog This apron is perfect, it's red and features cherries! Thanks for the opportunity!

I can never pass up a pretty vintage apron. Probably because my first sewing project was a green and check apron in 4-H club. I was still in grade school, but so proud of it. There were pockets at the bottom like a work apron. I wish I still had it. This one is in great condition, and very cheery! Almost too pretty to cook in. More appropriate for a hostess to wear after working over a hot oven all day and wants to make a great impression on her guests! Sheer white with fabric trim with bright, colorful cherries. Another treasury I did recently. I love all the color's of the 1970's. Who can forget the word "groovy" as well as fondue, owls, and mushrooms, all so popular during this decade? I'd like to introduce you to a Vintage Market teammate and her new venture. Please meet Toma of VictorianCobweb on etsy as she tells us about her new venture and take a look at the fabulous estate she is currently working on.....

I have been an Estate Helper for a number of years, before that was in partnership with a friend buying and selling estate contents. My husband of 22 years got me started in antiques by buying me a beautiful Victorian Mourning Brooch and I was won over then.

There is something to being involved in finding treasures - whether it be old or new - that I find really exciting, and being able to help someone find something that they will treasure for their lifetime is wonderful! Add to that being able to help a family with their loved ones treasures is something that is very sole satisfying.

I was given an opportunity to do this - my first - estate sale when I couldn't possibly think of taking it on but it was a door opened that I had wanted to pursue at some point in my life and I just decided if I didn't walk through now I never would.

The ladies that referred me are the local estate liquidators in this area and they assured me that I could do this or they wouldn't have recommended me so here I am! That's how Estates by Toma got started. I have to say I have had a blast! The family that I am working for has been awesome and they are having fun right alongside of me! That in itself says to me that I am doing something right! Every house, every loved one has something to say, and I find it most satisfying to find out what their treasures have to say about them.

You can see where the Christmas tree was screwed into the bottom of the ornament as well as the glue, which leads me to believe it was handmade, probably from a kit.

It's hard to believe the 4th of July is just next week! Here is a great vintage red, white and blue honeycomb bell.

I found this patriotic ornament at an estate sale stored with Christmas decorations. It could be used for Christmas or any other time. It celebrates the bicentennial with the 76 made from sequins. Perfect to hang from a tree or the center of a wreath.

Great trim for any sewing or crafting project.

Let's not leave Dad out! Imagine him dressed in this great vintage tie!

FUN KITCHEN COLLECTIBLES TO DISPLAY AND USE

The older I get, the more I want to surround myself with bright, fun items. Nothing stuffy! My eye is always drawn to color and these kitchen items are perfect to decorate with as well as use. The plastic coaster cozies (sometimes spelled cosies) are sized for juice glasses. Made from a fairly rigid plastic they have held up well over the years.

These sweet floral egg cups will still hold your hard boiled eggs. Who minds a chip or two??

Even the inside is is colorful!

A delightful potholder/hotpad to hang on your walls for a bright sunny splash of color. The dolls head is easily removed so you can wash the potholder if you actually use it.

These are Homco wall plaques. I frequently find them with fruit motiffs as well as owls and mushrooms. All popular during the 1970's. Made of a lightweight composite material.

RECYCLE REDUCE REUSE REPURPOSE

These delightful banners were created by Jill Ruth. Many thanks to her for allowing me to use this for my Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose series. More information can be found on her blog JillRuth & Co. We are proud to have her as member of our Vintage Market Etsy Team.

These banners are perfect examples of how to repurpose a vintage item without actually changing it. She took bib overall metal hardware, vintage fabric scraps, buttons and added embroidery to make what she calls one of a kind "tree banners". These are for Christmas but I can see them used for holidays, birthdays and special occasions.

I find these at estates sales in sewing baskets. I never imagined they could be used for something so unique!

This part of the hardware is used as a frame.

These can be used for hangers.

She added baling wire as a decorative touch or a hanger. Not grungy enough? Use scented coffee to give a darker aged look!

The first place I go at an estate sale is the basement. That's where people store items from years gone by. Things that "might" get used again, but never do. For years I passed up rusty tool, utility and tackle boxes. No more! The industrial look is the newest rage in collecting. These great boxes have unlimited uses. Perfect for crafting and office supplies. The sections in this one are great for beads, sewing trims, pins, paper clips and other smalls. The bottom is large enough for a few pairs of scissors.

RECYCLE REDUCE REPURPOSE REUSE

Another great way to repurpose an item. The idea is to find a new and unusual way to reuse vintage without changing the item self. This 6" art nouveau floral frog from KTiques on Etsy is a perfect example of repurposing an item and still retaining it's orginal condition. This is Miyata Ware, made in Japan circa 1920-1930's.

There are five holes on the top of the frog that can be used to display or store paintbrushes, pens, pencils, whimsical birthday wands, lollipops, and chopsticks. Just use your imagination!

The perfect accent piece to hold your makeup brushes on your vanity. Another example of how to reuse a beautiful vintage piece without altering it.

I have always loved to sew and craft. I would spend hours locked away with nothing but my fabric and craft supplies. A day out was spent in a favorite fabric or craft store, usually with 1 or 2 kids in tow. In the 1970's decoupage was very popular. It still is, only in different forms such as altered art. Today, I still love to sew. Scrapbooking has become my favorite craft, along with rubber stamping and altered art.

I guess that is why I can't pass these booklets up when I come across them at sales. Who wouldn't want to decorate their next party with these adorable little figures. ESTATE SALE FINDS

My daughter picked up these 2 pantry tins at a family run estate sale. She has an eye for the kind of items I like. At estate sales, two eyes are better than one! I would hate to leave something this neat behind for someone else!!!! I don't think I have ever seen a tin this large with the holes in the top. One tin has the holes, the other doesn't. Thanks to Another Time Antiques on Etsy, I now know the one with the holes is for allowing dough to rise and the color dates it to the 1920-1930's era.

Close up of top. It makes perfect sense that this is used for dough to rise!

The second tin is the same size, without the holes. They are not the typical green that you commonly see. It seems more an aqua color.

NEW WEBSITE ANTIQUES GALORE GAL

I've had my Trinkets And Treasures website for almost 3 years. It's been quite the experience as I knew nothing about computers other than opening my e-mail. My children had to show me how to do that! HTML was just a 4-letter word with no meaning. It took me 3 months to set the site up with a lot of help.

When I decided to start an ETSY shop, the name Trinkets And Treasures was taken and so was Antiques Galore, which is the name of my retail business. I don't know how the name Antiques Galore Gal came to be, but that is what I finally decided on for my etsy shop. Luckily that domain was also available and at that time I made the decision to change my website and retail name as well. Branding seems like a good idea.

I'll continue to sell candles, hips n' stixs, refresher oils and the array of vintage items as always, just with a new name. Look for the opening in a couple weeks!

RECYCLE REDUCE REPURPOSE REUSE

Vintage lovers always say collecting is recycling and it's going "green". Of course that is true, but to me collecting is something I do because I love time worn treasures. Some items however, no matter how much loved, are not useable for their original purpose. They may be too fragile or too rusty. That's when it's time to repurpose the item. Not change it, that would be upcycling, just find a unique use for it. While looking through my etsy Vintage Market Team shops, I came across these two photographs from Tea At Home With Olivia They are perfect examples of how a vintage item can become useful in a new way. This ladle has become a flower pot. Imagine how a row of different sizes would look!

I'd like to introduce you to one of my on line friends. We got to know each other through the etsy street team Vintage Market. Her etsy shop is named Southern Lady's Vintage and offers an eclectic blend of china, home decor, jewelry, kitchen items and more. I'll share a few of my favorite items starting with this very retro style Koret Wicker Purse. It is an open basket style wicker purse with leather accents. DO YOU LOVE KITSCH???

Do you love kitsch? It's hard for me to pass it by. An item that is probably so ugly that it is cute! Or just funny and hard to describe. Giving a definition of kitsch is easier by showing it to you. I recently found this picture of a bunny and chick. It is bold, has a blue rabbit with a surprised look on it's face and a baby chicken hatching from an egg. All of this surrounded by a bright pink flower field. Not pretty, but so cute you can't resist it! Read more about this picture in my Antiques Galore Gal shop

VINTAGE DOG AND BLUEBIRD PAINTING

This is another one of my estate sale finds! One thing I have learned in all my years of selling, is that anything related to pets will sell! People love their pets! This is on a solid surface and is textured. I don't know if it is a commercially produced painting, but seeing the dog with the blue bird was too adorable to pass up.

I saw this at an estate sale this weekend. I passed it up at first, but later came back to look at it again. Something about it just appealed to me, maybe because the red and green reminds me of Christmas. I decided to buy it and now am having a hard time selling it. It has grown on me!! So cute, with pockets on each side of the roof for plants or utensils. A tiny hole on the back gave away that is probably a wall pocket. It's for sale in my ANTIQUES GALORE GAL SHOP. A great collectible item, some crazing and a few small chips on the bottom.

I've been fascinated with buttons since I played with my grandmothers button tin as a child. Today, vintage buttons are just as popular as ever. They are used to make jewelry, picture frames, and dolls. I like to place my buttons in vintage jars, a little raffia and prim tag. Here are some of my recent estate sale finds.

One bonus in collecting buttons are the wonderful containers they are stored in. Most are found in vintage tins.

A close up of buttons in these tins show how dirty they were. I spent several hours just cleaning them, but it was well worth the effort as you can see.

FALL DECORATIONS

Before we turn out thoughts and efforts to the upcoming Christmas Season, I wanted to show you my store decorated for fall. It's been so busy, we just had our annual Apple Butter Festival where the town is shut off and 10's of thousands are shuttled in for the 2 day event. We have 2 upcoming Christmas events so the next few weeks will be busy as well.

Kimmswick is now designated as a historical town. I was fortunate to have one placed in front of my store.

I can never pass up the vintage photographs at estate sales. It's sad that families don't hold on to these dear family treasures. Truth is, they usally don't know who is in the photograph, and therefore, it has no meaning to them.

I love to look at the clothes, hats, scenery, and of course, the people! It's fascinating to me to go back in time. I'm posting a minature picture I purchased this past weekend at an estate sale. This is in a metal frame. More information in my ETSY SHOP

ESTATE SALE FINDS

Most people look forward to the weekends because they are off work. Not me! I'm one of those people who LOVE what I do! The first thing I do every Friday morning is to check the newspaper on-line classified ads for estate sales. This past week had some promising ads, so with my list in hand, I left to seek the weekly treasures I need to stock my store. There is nothing more exciting than to drive up to a sale and seeing people walk out with bags of "stuff"! You can usually get a feel for the sale as soon as you walk in the door. Is there a line??? Are the tables piled high?

The sales this past weekend were disappointing except for one. This one had an entire room of fabric, trims and ribbon. I spent a long time sorting through boxes on the floor and under the table. I found so many things I could barely make my way to the check out. That day, I kept thinking about everything I left behind. Yup, you guessed it. I went back the next morning, just hoping there were a few things left.

Needless to say, I purchased more trims! I made my way to the check out and the lady said "today is 1/2 price day". Can it get any better???

The spectacular necklace pictured is only one of many beautiful pieces this mother and daughter team has to offer! STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL KIMMSWICK, MISSOURI 2009

I posted about the annual Strawberry Festival in an earlier post. The town is packed with vendors. The next several posts have photos of the town, several shops and vendors, including the 2 I had at my shop Antiques Galore Gal. Visitors are shuttled into town and then taken back to their cars after a fun day of shopping and eating. We had a storm Sunday afternoon. Not as bad as predicted, the bad winds did not come. Most people stayed, which was good for all the vendors that worked so hard to set up their tents.

You can find the Dough Depot located at 216 Market Street, Kimmswick, Missouri.
Inside you will find a wonderful sit down resturant and old style candy and sweet shop always filled with homemade goodies! Pick from a list of snacks, pizza, sandwiches and salads, all served freshly made. Thankfully, they deliver food to all the shop owners come rain or shine! There is an outdoor window and tables set up on a patio for all the shoppers. The Kimmswick Kooler (frozen lemonade and vanilla ice cream blended together) is a favorite of everyone who tries it!

During the Strawberry Festival a booth is set up outside for the tens of thousands of visitors. You will find lines all the way to the street!

There is a gift shop inside filled to the brim with dough ornaments. Gingerbread is my favorite, but you can fine any theme you want. There are sports, teachers, nurses, doctors, fishermen and all Holidays just to name a few.

Meet Debbie and Dale, owners of the Bunny Patch gift shop. Stawberry Festival will find them outside with a large display of purses, jewelry and accessories. Inside you will find an assortment of gift items. Just in case you didn't guess, Debbie's favorite color is pink! Located on the corner of Market and Third Street. They host several vendors for the event.

I love fabric. I search for vintage fabric at every estate sale I go to. It is hard to find, and evern harder to find in good condition. I have a particular fondness for fabrics from the 30-40-50's, as with anything else from that era. When I find a vintage kitchen fabric, I'm in awe.
